You also have a Text in there which also may not measure out correctly. ListItemRenderer will be much faster than HBox, but you'll have to do more in AS than MXML. Can you draw up a picture of what you want the renderer to look like? Are images of a known size?

Is there something in the measure() or invalidation methods that I'm not doing? Also, I notice that when I scroll the list, items that are below the scroll are showing scrollbars when they scroll into view (I hope that makes sense...); is there an invalidation method I can call on the list itself that would prevent this?
