I am quite successful in Flex and have no Flash background. Flash WOULD be helpful if you are going to go deep into complex graphic behaviors, but is not at all necessary for creating business applications.
I do not know CF, but understand it integrates very well with Flex, and there are many people using that configuration, and there are some sites/blogs that specialize in it.
