One possibilty is the layout rules when not in the app care about the SWFLoader's measurements. If they do, the SWFLoader will measure to 0,0 and so will not have any size to it. That's because its content isn't loaded yet. If resizeToContent is false on its parent container, the SWFLoader may not get resized when the bits do come in.
