Thanks for the reply. I really don't need much beyond changing the color of a symbol in position in its parent SWF, don't really need an Illustrator tool (I've already spent the money on the REAL Illustrator!!).
I have worked with this same project in SVG before, so I was exploring Degrafa, but I think in my case it complicates things.
