Mucking directly with contentPane is not officially supported. It is
mx_internal so you can access it, but we reserve the right to change its
name or behavior or do away with it entirely in a future release.

If you are going to use Box, I don't get why you can't perform your
tween just by tweening the value of horizontalScrollPosition or
verticalScrollPosition

possible?

"It depends. Box is used to layout multiple children in either
horizontal or vertical order. Do you want to scroll more than one child
at once?"

Yeah, there could be an instance were I would need to scroll more than
one child.
Is there an easy way to access the property contentPane in
mx.core.Container?
