100 years ago, in the back woods of Pennsylvania, a young couple had a
baby the named Gordon. He wandered the woods as a child, chopping down
trees with his axe and whittling the wood into intricate structures.
One day, Gordon wandered too far and happened upon a road. He followed
that road all the way to California. Starving and dehydrated, he
collapsed on the road side. Fortunately for him, he was found the next
morning by gold miners who gave him food and shelter and put him to work
in the mines. One day, on a trip into town, he saw a shiny new machine
in a store window. It was a computer. Intrigued, and fed up with the
dust and grime of the mines, he spent his life savings on the computer,
studied it carefully and learned how to operate it. Soon he was
building intricate structures on the computer and townsfolk would gather
around admiring his work. Word of his acumen spread and one day, there
was a knock on his door. It was a group of rich men from San Francisco.
They wanted to build the next generation of web application technology,
called Flex. It would be based on an existing platform called Flash and
an existing language called ActionScript. The plan was to make it
possible to use declarative XML-based languages to create applications
that would revolutionize the world. Of course, Gordon could not resist,
and joined the team and started building his intricate structures in
ActionScript.

Today, Gordon steadfastly continues his quest to perfect the intricate
structures in Flex, despite colleagues who make up stories about him.

i would love to have sat in on the discussions when Flex was first
conceived. how did you guys decide to use mxml (xml)? how did you decide
to use actionscript or at what point did you say we need to rewrite this
and then decided what features to add in?

I think the team has quite a mix of language backgrounds. My previous

What are the background languages of the Adobe Flex programmers? I read
this article on Oliver Merks blog about how Java is similar to AS3 and
the team I work with is all Java developers.
