Take a look at the GIMP - it's a very powerful graphics program, similar to Photoshop. Runs on Linux, Mac OS/X, and Windows. I used to use Photoshop but don't use it enough any more to justify the $s for keeping it upgraded (plus it doesn't run on Linux, which is what I use for everyday needs). GIMP fits the bill.
