Eventually id like to see a modular version of PowerSDR that will allow us
to write our own modules or 'plugins'. Then we can start porting or
rewriting software for the digital modes that would be intimately tied in.
Virtual audio and serial port cables will eventually become a thing of the
past. They are important at this stage of the game because they allow us to
use existing software not specifically designed for PowerSDR. In addition
to digital modes, modules for logging and station control could bring
everything you need to one screen.

Id like a GUI that is more customizable. I would customize it in such a way
that I could setup different 'tabs' along the top of the PowerSDR screen for
different modes of operation. If I click on CW, I get skimmer like
functionality, if I click on SSB id have access to more filter and eq
settings. For contesting I would have a different configuration than for
DXing, or just tuning casually around the bands. Id setup buttons for each
antenna. If the antenna didn't work on the band that I currently had
selected, it would be 'greyed out'. Or maybe only the applicable antennas
would show up. The rotor for the selected antenna (if applicable) would
then be controllable from some buttons that came up in the 'antenna
controls' portion of the screen when that antenna was selected.

I would also like to see graphics card acceleration for the waterfall
display. I would like to have the waterfall pan with the VFO as I tune
around. That way I don't get 'lost' when I click on a new station to work.
(I understand that nothing will show up on the frequencies that were out of
the pass band) I would like features such as CW skimmer, the Bandmap feature
from N1MM, and even DX spots to be embedded directly over the waterfall
display in different layers that can be turned on or off. (like google
earth)

I would like real time 'DVR' type abilities, so I can jump back in time by a
few seconds and decode the station that I saw start transmitting 10khz below
me.

Do I expect to see any of this for this year's holidays? Of course not. But
I do suspect we will see this sort of thing in the future. I haven't
completely figured out what Deep Impact will be all about, but I have a
feeling it will be a step in the right direction.

Until then, I'll keep cobbling everything together using 30 different
programs and hundreds of windows all over my screen. It is fun to watch
this evolve.

Subject: [FlexEdge] What I want as my upcoming holiday present...

I want a software based TNC that is *not* AWGPE. I want it to be open
source. And best of all, I want it to be conversant in I/Q in addition to
AF so that I can feed it and receive complex data in the digital domain. I
want it and my SDR software to talk the same language without the need of an
interpreter or a virtual Rosetta Stone.

The best of both worlds would be a modular program where the foundation
layer was I/Q based and abstracted from the service layer so you could plug
different modem modules into it to do digital modes and one of them would be
an APRS enabled packet modem.

(YES. I am frustrated getting a VHF/UHF SDR operational on packet and
having to resort to surgically attaching a hardware TNC to my SOFTware
defined radio. I have "Borged up" my beautiful SDR and none too happy about
it.)
