I'm still doing it. With ease! I am relying on one of the oldest programming 
languages existing that also provides a complete "image-based" (similar to a 
virtual machine) execution environment. That execution environment abstracts 
away most of the OS level stuff and let's me do cross-platform graphics, 
cross-platform computation, cross-platform I/O. Wonder what that is?

Common Lisp. See www.franz.com or www.lispworks.com for excellent CL 
implementations.

It does take some learning. But then there's always Greenspun's Tenth Rule.
