It depends on what you mean by "readily". I can buy copper-to-fiber media
converters over-the-counter. In fact, if I were doing a project where I was
remoting a radio on or at the base of a tower I would seriously consider
using fiber as the interconnect for signalling. It is how I wire buildings
that have different grounds.

Yes, it would be more expensive but just as doable.
