If I understand the antenna's manual (and the recommendations I had here

Where on earth is 5dB beyond a free-space dipole coming from with a single ground mounted monopole? That makes absolutely no sense.

Under the best of circumstances you're very lucky to be getting near 0dBi with a quarter-wave vertical on the ground. Between the imperfect ground screen and the coax you're probably losing at least 1 - 1.5dB on the low bands. That's really pretty good for a vertical.

OK, I'm probably getting my sources mixed up. Your statement also matches my results much better. I guess I'll settle for the improved takeoff angle over what I have had before. That seems to be true, at least, as I am hearing better. With the amp, it probably will be enough for DXCC since I am making contacts as it stands and, despite a little disappointment, better than before (I barely made one or two with the G5RV and CW at that). Come to think of it, my competition at EI6S was not verticals, but other types.
