Hi Larry,
I did work you of course and most of the big-guns did - but it was
complicated, all the caribeans vere listening better - and also trying
down. If you have not heard the Eu down it might have been some sort of
local noise or I do not know what - but you were well audible - and deaf
or ignorant to EU since the EU was calling you that is for sure !
I am sure it was not while the bad radio.
As a matter of fact I have not used the brand new SDR1K in the contest - I
was not brave enough for that...I was trying for Eu trophy on 40m and
SDR was too new for me....
I together with OK1RF have set (in thursday before CQWWSSB) up SDR1K+D44
and antenna switch to:
IC756PROIII, IC775, TT Orion and were comparing those 4 radios listening
on the air in various tough conditions for more that 3 hours - on 40m.
The biggest chalenge was listening to 9M2TO running Eu pile-up. 9M2TO was
loud no problem the Eu was too close mostly very weak.
At first I have to say we have not found - while trying hard - a single
station not audible on all 4 radios. On CW the clear winner was the SDR1K
- the signals were cleanest. On SSB it was more equal we had a feeling
that close to HUGE broadcasters the IC756PROIII was the cleanest - but the
differences were minimal - only feeling. So as predicted and probably
expected - all those radios did similary well.
For CW on Low bands my favorite list would be:
1.SDR
2.IC756PROIII
3.TT Orion
4.IC775
For CW on High bands I would swap Orion with IC775
For SSB
IC756PROIII
SDR
IC775
Orion.
But again only feeling.
I have not tried to transmitt with the SDR1K yet.
I decided against it for the contest - specially on 40m SSB since it does
not have DUAL-WATCH I use instead of split most of the time. I understand
it is not possible with current Hardware but it would be worth
considering.... How ever the need is only 40+80m SSB - Of course not
speaking of SO2R.
I have tried N1MM inside one PC but seriously I can not imagine how to run
a contest that way since if N1MM window is active SDR does not react and
vice-versa creating a big "MOUSE BATTLE" or ALT-TAB so I tried to install
N1MM into another computer connected through cross RS232 cable and worked fine - as the state of today:
computer with SDR is the TRX and for LOGing one needs another one - that
is as I see it no problem.
Interesting would be if the two USB GADGETS Griffin+PowerMate would be
living not through the keyboard driver i.e. WINDOWS need to have that
window active but somehow ?!? directly ? Than one can controll SDR through
those gadgets and have LOGGING win active all the time. Is it realistic ????
73 !

Hello all,
One comment to V31MD operation.
I ran 40m single band with my 2x5Y full size Yagi and I have to say you
were probably the TOUGHEST multiplier to achieve not because you were
weak
or inaudible but because of the way you run - ingnored there is 1000
stations in Eu you could easily work and who want to work you. The globe
is not only USA !
You were not loud in Eu but reasonably audible - the problem was you
were
NOT at ALL so far as I have observed (at least 15 times) listened on
your
own frequency or CQ "upstairs" and listen "downstairs". I came to you at
least 5 times before I made it and no avail. There was always a couple
of
Eu stations calling but you did not care at all !.
Well, I think I did most of the 40m station work and I did care. I love
to work Europe anytime. I just did not succeed anywhere near as much as I
would have liked in the contest.
I expected to work a lot more Europe than I did. At home, I can work
Europe on 40 any night, usually do, and expected to do the same from V3.
But, for the most part, I didn't. I am not sure why. I know I did spend
time
listening on frequency. It's just that I didn't hear much, not from
Europe. So, I probably went with where the contacts were. On frequency,
I mostly heard Canadians and a few Carribeans. And, as I recall, not much
of either. I don't know why -- I was able to hear Japan just fine.
Working many Japanese on 40 was a highlight of the whole trip.
I would like to be talking just as fondly about my European run on 40, but
it never happened. I don't really know why.
I may have more to say about this when I get home so I can look up
particulars.
But, in fact, it would have been a great pleasure to have worked more
Europeans on 40 meters. Not doing so was a disappointment.
I am very distressed that you had so much trouble in particular. Despite
my general difficulties, I should have been able to work you easily, even
if I wasn't listening on frequency as much as you might have expected.
