If they scare that easily, may I suggest a hobby like woodworking? ;] Seriously, the issues with latency are not unique to SDR. The live audio guys go crazy tying to trace the pops and drop outs in their recordings, only to find that their (firewire, shared IRQ's, nVidia video cards, et al) have insurmountable DPC latencies. It's especially true with Vista.
If they're serious about the recording hobby, or audio pros, they buy an expensive dedicated machine for a few thousand dollars. No home photos on that one. The basis of Neal's offering, however, is "acceptable performance at minimum price." I'm computer savvy (Microsoft Certified Professional awarded many years ago), but I weighed the time (and money) to tune a dedicated PC, and found Neal's minimum pricing option very attractive. Full disclosure- I have neal00001 .
