Stan,

I do not believe that you can put a hard, fast number on the threshold where
DPC's will cause problems or not. Especially since other factors, such as
RFI, enter into the equation as well. All that can really be done is
define a vague range where below that range is almost undoubtedly safe,
above that range is almost certainly a problem, & within that range is a
crap shoot. Ask Tim or Neal for approximate numbers defining the range.

Changes & improvements to the software & the firmware come so rapidly that
it is impossible for the documentation to keep up with current practice.
Not to mention improvements in the FireWire driver.

As for setting the driver to Normal vs. Safe Mode 1 -- the FLEX-5000 manual
was written at the time of the release of PowerSDR v1.14.0 & the FLEX-3000
manual with the release of v1.18.0. There have been many improvements since
v1.18.0 that now allow running the FireWire driver in Normal mode. The
documentation simply has not caught up with reality yet. Furthermore, it
never will due to the rapid release of improvements in the software. When
the documentation is next updated, it will only be in sync with the software
for at most a day or two. The manual is best used as a reference for normal
day-to-day operation of the radio type functions (changing frequency, using
filters, etc.). Optimum setup values vary with each revision to the code
andare discussed on the FlexEdge reflector.
