One of my favorite transceivers was the ICOM IC-781. It had a spike of 150 watts before the ALC took over. Quite a few low drive amps died due to this problem. ICOMs answer was "That is the way it works". The users of this rig figured out the problem and corrected it. It required swapping a couple of resistors and changing a couple of capacitors. This in a $6,000 transceiver in 1988.
