Yes I update the sources every time I want to work on the project ... and I must say sometimes I have fun merging the changes.
Regarding security stuff I've started to use the allow edit for a topic to Check if a user can add attachments. There shouldn't be too much that affects you right now, but I do touch pieces of code across a fairly wide cross-section of the codebase.
