Okay, that worked. some problems with the xml aircraft files, but at least
it got to the preference file
and into the aircraft files. Hopefully, if I just copy over the command
options from the cygwin bat files
that should get a set of working options (he says with a grin)

so it sounds like it's best to leave the defaults alone and run from
/usr/local/bin. And should one assume
that by putting the base in /usr/local/FlightGear/ requires NO argument to
set the root for fgfs

Thanks, I'll play with. Maybe the writeup on the webpage needs a little more
info on how and what is
happening.
