Hmm.. I guess on Unix systems we 'could' first look for 'preferences.xml' in the users home directory and then if not found look for it in $FG_ROOT But maybe this can be done by adding an appropriate entry into the '~/.fgfsrc' file as that is parsed after the 'default' preferences.xml is parsed.
