What is your airspeed when you engage?  Are you stalling?  With the jets
especially you will go down if you get behind the power curve (unless you have
lots of altitude and give it full thrust).  Also I think that this can happen
if you are using keyboard control, depending on where you've got the elevator
set.  The autopilot uses the trim control,  but if you've got your elevator
way down,  you won't fly when the trim is being applied by the autopilot.
