Not really. The slats slide along tracks and their weight keeps them in the
extended position. Part
of the walk-around is to push up on the slats and note free and easy
movement. Air pressure against the wing moves them to the retracted
position. As airpseed is increased/reduced they extend or retract in
response to the
corresponding force of the relative wind. Short of a major structual failure
(large bird strike perhaps?) not a whole
lot than can go wrong and even then chances are they will still extend
