I downloaded the source code, but I'm not going to try to build it
until someone adds autoconf support.

There are many good Blender tutorials on the net (I started with the
castle one, then moved on to the pencil).  For FlightGear, you have to
stick to meshes (no nurbs) and work hard to keep the poly count low --
no extruded 64-sided mesh circles, for example.
