You are almost certainly right, but we can allow the same thing in the regular 3D modelling code by putting a transform above everything. My concern is that cockpit wonks already have to use the 3D animation code for some things (throttle, yoke, etc.) so forcing them to learn another method for placing gauges is a little rough.
