The net result is that the "instrument texture" 
   < the instrument impostor >
is built up from several small pieces. 

ie the background, the needle, the bezier etc  each needing its own 
translation rotation etc, whereas the impostor can be drawn as a 
single quad with a single matricx mult and no calls to polygonOffset
