Here are a few flatlander examples.

One nice one, closer to Curtis's home, is the Mississipi -- start in
Minneapolis and fly south, following the river (and the roads and
railroads beside it).  Make sure you have a map with you -- it's about
ten times as much fun when you can identify every little town and
road.

Another nice one is the Hudson River north to Albany then the Mohawk
River westwards most of the way to Syracuse, following the New York
Central Railroad.

You'll want William Riley's scenery for this one to get the roads,
(smaller) rivers, railroads, and small towns; otherwise, things get
boring pretty fast.  Both are great at night, with the lights from the
towns and on the highways.
