Hello together, as some of you already have noted I'm quite interested in having FlightGear working together with XFree86/DRI on my Radeon. Up to XFree86-4.2.x things are quite fine (although not _that_ fast as it would be possible with extended use of the features current hardware offers).
Unfortunately the ongoing DRI development has two issues with FlightGear. There is the phenomenon of X server lockups when using the Radeon driver. Another issue concerns lightning - an issue that Erik Hofman once reported to have noticed on his O2 (I don't have the posting any more): FlightGear looks way too dark when hardware-T&L is enabled for the Radeon driver. This looks like this (at 11 am local time !): http://document.ihg.uni-duisburg.de/bitmap/FGFS/TCL.png I would like to have offered a screen shot of the same situation with hardware-T&L disabled, but I got fed up after an uncounted number of X server lockups .... I think you know how the colours should look like. The whole time I was suspecting the DRI driver to be responsible for this, but this _might_ not be the case. Today Felix Kuehling was so kind to inform me of similar issues he discovered. I'd like to cite Felix: On Thu, Feb 13, 2003 at 04:12:46PM +0100, Felix Khling wrote: > As to the lighting problem, Brian and I discovered a few months ago that > an uninitialized (random) fourth component of the light source position > can cause large lighting differences between hardware and software TCL. > I made just that mistake :) and Brian pointed it out to me. I'd tend to believe in what Felix is talking about, because I know the very rare (an only one or two seconds short) effect, which might be related to certain angles between view, ground an the sun, where the colours look as expected - _despite_ hwardware-T&L enabled. Until now I was not able to reproduce this effect in a way that is suitable for being documented. Would anyone with the necessary insight be so kind to comment on this ?
