It may not be for most cards these days,  but I've been sticking to using
square textures anyway.  When non-square texture support first came out, I
believe there were some cards that would use up memory equal to the longest
dimmension squared so that there was no advantage to doing a rectangle...but
that may nolonger be an issue either.

Larger textures automatically get scaled down so that they will work with
Voodoo cards.
