I've always found hat switches to be darn near impossible to use for
controlling critical things. I reluctantly use them for the view,
because it won't impact the aircraft flight path.

When I fly with my Wingman Rumblepad, I map the rudder to the horizontal
dimension of the hat and ignore the vertical dimension. The "center
rudder" button is nice touch.

It would be rather hard to make the assignment contingent on the
presence of rudder pedals. What do people think? Should rudder pedal
challenged folks be recommended to use numpad-0 and numpad-enter for
rudder by default? Would it be possible at all to detect the absence of
rudder pedals to influence the assignment of the hat switch?

I for one prefer to use the keyboard for view settings, and control the
rudder with the hat.

Cheers,

If the only tool you've got is an axe, every problem looks like fun!
