Monday evening I updated SimGear, the source, and data from cvs. The dc3.xml file in Aicraft-yasim was changed for the worse (IMHO).

1. Wing twist seems to work as an aileron, not washout. The value of -3 seems to induce a left roll that takes about 1/3 of my yoke rotation to overcome and when I edited it to a value of 3, I got a similar right roll tendency.
2. The hstab effectiveness was reduced to 1.2 (from 3). With this value, the ac lifts off before the tail comes up even with significant down elevator and the ac porpoises down the runway and wheel landings are impossible. I have posted on this before. The real dc3 tail comes up right away and the ac accelerates on the mains. I have used hstab effectiveness as high as 3.5 to get the ground handling and acceleration on the mains to be more real. Also, the total hstab width on the dc3 is 8.13 m in a dimensioned drawing from the DC-3 Aviation Museum web site. You can lower the effectiveness and still get reasonable acceleration on the mains with hstab length of 4.1 which is approximately 8.13/2.
3. The elevator effectiveness was decreased to 0.3 (from 1.25). This seems very anti intuitive as prop wash is not modeled usually implies effectiveness for elevator and rudder greater than 1. This also makes it far less likely that you can get up on the mains.
4. The rudder effectiveness was increased to 2 (from 1.25). This increase is not necessary if the other values are set to allow one to get up on the mains early in the acceleration roll like the real ac does.

Was there a reason for the changes to hstab an vstab that I am missing?
A big dc3 fan,
Dave Perry
