This isn't a knock against metakit. What it is written to do, it does very well. However, it was *way* overkill for our needs and caused more than a few build problems for the new comers.
I have rewritten the flightgear code that used metakit and have removed all traces of metakit from simgear and will probably have done the same in the flightgear tree by the time most people read this. Hopefully that is one less thing to trip up the unwary ...
