While I understand where you are coming from James, my training in writing recognizes the relationship between style and voice in a way that resists the temptation to privilege certain styles all the time. Frankly, I like the old version better for an introduction to this project. A more inviting style clues the reader in right away that this isn't another Mozilla or Openoffice big money backed/organized project. But of course those changes are fine.
