Have you tried it in demo mode? In that mode it doesn't use any input from the receiver, and it's actually possible to set the position moving using the arrow keys on the map screen - if there's any mode likely to take input from NMEA then this will be the one.
I tried it in simulation mode, which simply keeps the last known position, and lets me pan around the map (but not actually move the reported position) -- it did not work with NMEA. How do you get to demo mode?
