Thanks. It looks like it is possible for FlightGear to drive a slaved Garmin 196 (and probably a 195 or 295 as well), using the Garmin 400 series protocol. Here's the thread that lead to the announcement quoted above:

I've sent a message to Pete Dowson asking for a pointer to the spec he used and any other information he might be able to pass on. I'm encouraged that his Garmin 196 support worked on the first try, even though he didn't have a Garmin GPS to test it on (i.e. he was coding blind).
