I'm thinking I want to get into building panels for FG aircraft. Either I am missing it or the tools for the job are vi, gimp, an XML reference and all the FG header files ?!?
Any comments or suggestions appreciated!
I'll chime in with a couple comments.
First off, yes this definitely looks intimidating at first glance, but give it a chance. Once you jump in and start working with the files, it's not nearly as bad as it might have first appeared. After you stare at xml for a bit, it does start to make sense and becomes much more human readable.
I believe you can type "Shift-F3" to reload panel changes on the fly, so you can immediate test your change without needing to restart FlightGear or do any kind of compiling. That is *extremely* convenient when you are tweaking the instruments.
There are numerous examples of panels, so in many case you could start by piecing together existing stuff. That get's you up and running quickly and then you can make aircraft specific changes at your liesure.
So far, what I've said has mostly applied to 2d panels. If you are interested in building 3d panels, then you'll probably want tips and advice from the 3d panel experts (which isn't me.) :-)
Regards,
Curt.
