Not being a pilot I've never used an a/c GPS, but I do have a small hand-held 
unit (Garmin e-trex) and it can do elevations and multi-waypoint routes.  The 
model I have is the most basic but I'm pretty sure that only slightly more 
expensive versions will also do nearest waypoint/stored location too.
