In the early days of the Autopilot project there was a guy claiming
much better results using a different approach (i.e. _no_ Kalman
filtering). He even posted a link to his thesis - but the link got lost
after I accidentially removed my bookmarks file. Unfortunately not all
papers on

P.S.: For my dimploma 'thesis' I built a 2D-filter for thermal analysis
      of cast-iron. Yes, this doesn't fulfill the needs for 3D-tracking
      of an aerial vehicle but at least I made the experience that it
      pays off to consider uncommon filter designs for individual
      purpose ....  Everyone talks about Kalman filtering but I'm
      convinced that a different approach might maks sense.
