Well, if you own Sun hardware then you typically own appropriate
Solaris media as well - and Solaris8 has been shipped for a really long
period of time ;-)

Upgrading might not be a simple solution as FG might not be the primary
application on that machine :-) but I agree that it's not _that_
likely that the problem is OS dependent.

You could run FG via a remote display, that is what I've been doing to
test-run the Solaris binaries. The Solaris OpenGL-libraries are capable
of routing real OpenGL commands to a remote display server via GLX
(this is impossible with Mesa/DRI). Using this method I've been running
FG on Solaris while having the display on the SGI - which effected in
almost the same framerate as running FG locally on the SGI.
