Yep -that's exactly the sort of thing I was referring to.  The Panavia Tornado 
uses a lookahead radar to evaluate the terrain and build an elevation 
profile, upon which it overlays a ski-toe curve flight envelope.  The terrain 
avoidance system ensures the flight envelope avoids the terrain by looking 
for intersections of the two curves:)

A fully featured terrain avoidance system would be expensive within FG, in 
terms of resources, but I think simpler and less resource hungry schemes are 
possible, certainly in straight-line flight, and which would be a great 
improvement over the current facility.
