The Economist once had an article suggesting (I'm not sure how seriously) that languages like German or Japanese could be a competitive advantage precisely because they're not widely spoken. In an international business meeting, English speakers have no language to switch to for a private discussion that the other side can't understand. (Of course, nowadays, you could just discretely record the conversation on your cell and have it translated when you get home, if it's not too late.)
