IIRC, neither the proprietary or open-source ATI drivers support the 
full OpenGL feature set atm and unfortunately FG uses several of 
the features that the ATI drivers can't currently handle.  AMD/ATI 
have said that they plan to improve OpenGL support and I've heard 
that they have made some progress in that area - perhaps some other 
users have tried the newer ATI drivers with success.  I haven't 
heard anything about how the xorg drivers are progressing but you 
can see what support is working or planned on the xorg web-site 
somewhere.
