I have some limited experience with flight controls and autopilots. I've developed a couple that have flown on aircraft (HiMAT Flight Test Maneuver Autopilot and the F-15 Maneuver Autopilot) and one or two that were strictly for JSBSim. I've been thinking about putting together an autopilot for FlightGear. I hesitate to attempt any dialog on this channel (where, it seems, that even a fairly simple issue can generate hundreds of posts over a month-long period), but would be willing to work with anyone who wants to develop an autopilot for a specific aircraft.

Fun stuff to think about and play with:)

It really is fun. And, you are right, that data is not easy to
come by. For some aircraft, however, it can be found. This
publication has some control system information for a small
selection of aircraft:

You can sometimes search the NASA archives and find a report with
lots of good data. The X-29 is one of those. When the data is not
available, a good guidance and control system can still be made.

In my "day job" I do simulation, modeling, and analysis related
to the abort system for the new crew exploration vehicle that
NASA is developing. In first stage flight, the guidance and
control system can be quite simple. I've created a generic rocket
model in JSBSim with a fairly simple guidance and control scheme,
and it flies nicely. I am also aware of several medium complexity
and one very extensive UAV guidance and control scheme that was
done using the JSBSim flight control components. It's still
tedious to use a text editor to create something more involved; a
good GUI editor for systems would be a great tool to have.

Ah - the Grumman X-29 FSW - that could be fun to do:) I see the pdf you link to also includes the XB-70A :) <homer>mmmm XB70</homer>

IIRC, you were working on the STS program at one point - have you moved over to the Orion project now?

Will your JSBSim rocket FDM find it's way into FG at some point? Once you've started thinking about this control system stuff, especially with respect to aerobatic control, I think it's inevitable that missile control systems crop up (probably the simplest aerobatic model because of the axial symmetry) so I'd like to have a play with it.

I haven't reached the point where I need a gui yet but I have found that I need to draw out some schematics to help me keep track of stuff as things get more complex.
