We don't really want to be committing patches that add #ifdef control variables - if everyone agrees the OpenThreads primitives are the way to go, we should switch permanently, not support both. But in the short term it's a good way to test if this change causes ay problems.

Excellent idea. With the patch and some other changes it saves 100MB over terrain, less over ocean.
That's just after the scenery has finished loading, should be more over time.
