..ok, I have no experience with U-6.06, but there has been a lot of
good things happening to ATI support in the last 3 years, AMD bought
them and released HW docs to the x.org guys etc, is why I recommend 
a new try with a U-8.10 Live CD. 

..you want the "ati" or "radeon" driver for your card, "ati" will load
"radeon" correctly if your card is ok,  but you could have an oddball
card or a damaged one too.  Just DL, burn and boot a U-8.10 Live CD 
and tell us how it works.

..this would be a PCI ID or an X issue, unless you have it working
correctly on X in Ubuntu-6.06 and not in FG.
