..that's pushing "spiffing" a bit ;o), I had 1.0.1 fail 
(on Debian Squeeze/Sid) until I tried lsb_release.

Maybe ccontrol or dmucs too?  Details in spiffy output of: 
"apt-cache show distcc ccache ccontrol dmucs |less". ;o)
