Well, I'm not sure I'm doing anything special.  It has just worked for me so
I have never dug in and tried to think about /lib vs. /lib64 with respect to
FlightGear and it's dependencies.  I've heard of others who have built just
fine on 64bit machines, and 64 bit has been out in the wild for a few years
now.

Do you have details of the configure or make error you are seeing posted
somewhere?

My grandmother always said I had more luck than sense ...
