Nah, 'configure' also prints a nicely readable status to STDOUT, so,
for these simple cases like OSG libraries not being found you don't
even have to browse the boring 'config.log'  ;-)

It's probably not the silver bullet but at my end it's been serving as
a nice and quite 'clean' solution. Apparently at least some of the
distribution package manintainers are doing exactly this.
