To echo what Curt said, Martin's efforts are pretty classic tools R&D work - 
totally unseen, but ultimately make an enormous difference to everyone's 
experience. 

It's also good to know that the 'whole world' dataset is still large enough to 
cause modern GIS tools some problems - the current baroque pieces of terragear 
mostly exist (as I understand it anyway) because back then there was no decent 
free tools, and computers were 'smaller' - in every axis that matters. Building 
on existing GIS software is obviously the way forward, and of course nothing is 
ever simple when working with other people's datasets.

(It is quite unfortunate that the CORINE data topology is so poor, though!)
