Yeah, this is the best answer for this kind of problem. The .git directory ends up being near-zero size (so long as the deltas between trees are small), and you pay only for the copy of the active tree. So resource consumption is more or less the same as having two "checkouts" of a remote tree. You do have to manage the extra steps required to push/pull/merge between the trees though.
