Please, I have been following this project since some time around 
2005/2006. I know, that is many years shorter than you have, but I have 
not, as far as I recall, seen $FG_HOME used for anything else than the 
place to store per-user files.

When I looked for the first commit containing FG_HOME I passed all the 
more recent commits containing that string and my brief inspection didn't 
see anything that contradicted $FG_HOME as the place for per-user 
files (~/.fgfs/ etc.). You are much welcome to look closer at these 
commits.

Even if $FG_HOME was originally used for something else (while not leaving 
any obvious trace in the source repository) I would prefer that 
we let the current usage from the last 5-6 years prevail rather than 
trying to revert and replace that with something else now.

Maybe $FG_BASE or $FG_INSTALLDIR for the installation directory?
