The C172's I know (past 1970, I think) are having the two lights mounted into the cowling right below the prop - see: http://www.c172fg.de/d-eeqa-dismount-1-03.jpg The taxi light (I don't remember which one it is) is pitched slightly downwards and illuminates not more than 50 m in front of the aircraft. Some types are having individual instruments back-lit (depends on the particular instrument), but in general there's a red overhead lamp in the ceiling, illuminating the entire panel. Overall it depends on the age of the aircraft and on the preferences of the owner.
