It improved support for Linux distributions a lot, which do have fixed rules to use shared libs. Since shared lib support is now in SG, all distros can/could drop their local makefile patches, which they had to use before. It has removed a major obstacle preventing distros from quickly updating to the latest FG release: they no longer need to wait for a volunteer to update their local makefile patches for every single FG release.
